You gotta “wear the clothes”

When I speak with teams about what they need to do to be successful in their job and exceptional at goal achievement in their organization, I frequently refer to the movie: “The Devil Wears Prada”.  The question I will ask is “when did Andie become good at her job?”  The answer is “when she wore the clothes”.

Here was a smart girl who was trying very hard to serve a seemingly impossible boss with even more impossible demands. But once she wore the clothes, she understood the needs of the company at a deeper level and was able to achieve what seemed to be previously impossible.  She had to become a passionate believer in the cause (notwithstanding the fact that Miranda was a Human Resource nightmare).

You need to be a passionate believer in your organization’s mission in order to excel in your job performance and at your professional goals. You need to be “all in”.  If you work in a healthcare facility, you need to get your care there and bring your family and your children there too. And you need to refer it to others. You need to believe so deeply in your organization that you literally wear it.  If you find that you can’t “wear the clothes” where you are, you may not be able to reach the success that you desire.  If that is the case, consider finding another place where you can be a passionate believer in the mission -that is where you will find your ultimate success.
