When I speak with teams about what they need to do to be successful in their job and exceptional at goal achievement in their organization, I will sometimes refer to the movie: “The Devil Wears Prada”. The question I will ask is “when did Andie become good at her job?” The answer is “when she wore the clothes”.
Here was a smart girl who was trying very hard to serve a seemingly impossible boss with even more impossible demands. But once she wore the clothes, she understood the needs of the company at a deeper level and was able to achieve what seemed to be previously impossible. She had to become a passionate believer in the cause.
You need to be a passionate believer in your organization’s mission in order to excel in your job performance. You need to be “all in”. If you work in a healthcare facility, this also means you need to get your care there and bring your family and your children there too. And you need to refer your facility to others. You need to believe so deeply in your organization that you literally wear it. If you find that you can’t “wear the clothes” where you are, you may not be able to reach the success that you desire there. If this is the case, consider what it will take for you to become a passionate believer in the mission, and get to work to move yourself and your organization towards that goal.
